Contemporary Bar Stools

Contemporary bar stools are modern seating designs characterized by clean lines, minimal ornamentation, and a focus on both form and function. Choose bar stool height based on the surface it will be paired with. As a general guide, leave 9–13 inches between the seat and the underside of the counter or bar top. 

For a standard 36-inch kitchen counter, a counter stool with a seat height of 24–26 inches is ideal. For a bar-height surface at 40–42 inches, look for a bar stool with a seat height of 28–30 inches. Always measure your surface before purchasing to ensure a comfortable, proportional fit.

A practical guide is to allow 26–30 inches of counter space per stool to ensure comfortable seating and elbow room. For a 60-inch island, two to three contemporary bar stools fit comfortably. A 90-inch island can usually accommodate three to four stools. 

For oversized or statement-style contemporary bar stools with wider seats, lean toward the higher end of the spacing allowance to avoid a cramped look and maintain ease of movement.

The most popular contemporary bar stool styles include backless stools with swivel bases, low-back upholstered counter stools, metal frame stools with wooden or cushioned seats, and sculptural designs that double as decorative pieces.
